A floatation tank is an escape from the background noises and distractions that cloud our everyday experiences and keep us from discovering who we are. It's an escape from the forces of gravity that weigh heavy on our joints and muscles, and cause aches and pains.
A weightless state is created by adding 1000 pounds of epsom salts to 1000 litres of water. The water is then heated to skin temperature. After a few minutes in the tank, the separation between air and water becomes blurred, and the occupant has the sensation of floating in space. With total relaxation, our brainwaves shift from alpha to theta waves, which are associated with deep meditation. Our healing potential is accelerated with an increase in peripheral blood flow.
In this state we see a flood of endorphins into the bloodstream, and a decrease in the hormones associated with stress. There is also a corresponding decrease in heart rate and blood pressure. The two hemispheres of the brain begin to synchronize as we float in an alert but blissfully relaxed, dream-like state. An hour in the tank is said to be the equivalent of 4 hours of sleep and you exit the tank feeling calm and refreshed.
